Our brief was to create an accessible website design that embodied Shelley’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. The site needed to represent diverse workplaces visually while ensuring that all potential clients, regardless of ability, could easily navigate and engage with Human Matters’ services.

Our Approach to ACCESSIBLE Website Design

We began by conducting extensive research into accessibility standards and best practices, ensuring that the accessible website design would meet WCAG 2.1 AA compliance requirements. This included implementing proper colour contrast ratios, keyboard navigation functionality, and screen reader compatibility throughout the site architecture.

The visual identity we developed for Human Matters centred around carefully selected imagery that authentically represented workplace diversity across age, ethnicity, gender, and ability. Rather than relying on stock photography clichés, we curated a library of natural, candid visuals that portrayed genuine human interactions in professional settings.

For the technical implementation of the accessible website design, we integrated the UserWay accessibility plugin, providing specialised tools for users with various needs. This powerful solution offers specific accessibility profiles for people with motor impairments, visual impairments (including blindness and colour blindness), dyslexia, cognitive and learning disabilities, seizure disorders, epilepsy, and ADHD. Each profile customises the site navigation and display to accommodate specific accessibility requirements, ensuring that Shelley’s message of inclusivity was reflected in both content and functionality.
