Heritage Logo Design: Giving Brierley Hill Market Hall a New Lease of Life
Brierley Hill Market Hall stands as a proud testament to community commerce, having served the local area since its construction in the 1930s. Located on the bustling Brierley Hill High Street, this historic market hall represents a golden age of British retail when independent traders were the backbone of every community. The building itself is an architectural gem from the Art Deco period, featuring distinctive design elements that reflect the optimism and craftsmanship of its era.
Today, this cherished market hall continues to house a wonderfully diverse collection of independent traders who embody the spirit of traditional British commerce. From skilled butchers offering locally-sourced meats and experienced delicatessen owners curating fine foods, to traditional cobblers practicing centuries-old shoe repair techniques and knowledgeable fruit vendors sourcing the finest seasonal produce. The market also serves modern needs with cleaning goods suppliers, cosmetics stalls, pet food retailers, and dozens of other specialist vendors who collectively create a unique shopping destination that simply cannot be replicated by modern chain stores.
The challenge presented to us was both exciting and significant: create a powerful brand identity that would draw people back into the market hall whilst raising its profile within the wider West Midlands community. In an era where high streets across Britain are struggling to compete with online retail and out-of-town shopping centres, Brierley Hill Market Hall needed something special to distinguish itself and remind people of the irreplaceable value of independent, local commerce.
The market hall required a cohesive heritage logo design that could work seamlessly across multiple platforms – from their developing website presence and growing social media channels to eye-catching physical signage that would draw foot traffic from the high street. The brand needed to give this historic venue the contemporary digital presence it deserved whilst absolutely respecting and celebrating its distinguished past. Most importantly, the heritage logo design had to capture the authentic character of the market hall – its warmth, its community spirit, and its proud connection to nearly a century of continuous service to the local area.

Our Approach: Heritage Logo Design That Honours History
Heritage logo design requires extensive research, and we began with a deep dive into the market hall’s authentic architectural features. We spent considerable time at the site, carefully photographing the newly installed canopy at the front of the building, which had been meticulously replicated from the original 1930s design when the market hall first opened its doors to the community. This canopy restoration project provided us with a unique opportunity – we could work with genuine period details that had been faithfully recreated using original architectural plans and historical photographs.
This magnificent canopy became our primary source of creative inspiration, as we methodically analysed its distinctive geometric shapes, carefully studied its period-appropriate colour palette, and examined the intricate patterns that reflected the Art Deco influence of the era. Through this detailed analysis, we began to understand the building’s visual DNA – the design language that made it uniquely representative of its time whilst ensuring it would remain timeless for generations to come.
We then immersed ourselves completely in the broader design language of the 1930s era, conducting thorough research into logos, typography, and graphic design principles from that pivotal decade in British design history. We studied everything from vintage market signage and period advertising materials to classic British design publications and archived commercial graphics from the era. This comprehensive research informed every single aspect of our heritage logo design approach, ensuring we could capture the authentic spirit and aesthetic principles of the period whilst creating something that would work effectively across today’s diverse digital landscape.
The final heritage logo design incorporates a carefully crafted icon that is directly derived from the canopy’s distinctive geometric form – we didn’t simply reference it, but actually extracted the essential visual elements that make the architecture so compelling. This icon is paired with typography that perfectly echoes the clean, sophisticated, and undeniably classic style that defined 1930s British graphic design. We deliberately kept our entire approach refreshingly simple and elegantly uncluttered – avoiding any unnecessary embellishments, trendy flourishes, or contemporary design tricks that might compromise the authentic period aesthetic we were so carefully crafting.
The result is a heritage logo design that feels both historically accurate and timelessly elegant – a visual identity that honours the market hall’s distinguished past whilst positioning it confidently for its bright future as a cornerstone of the local community
