Web Design Collaboration: Building The Stronger Beginnings Website

Samantha Billingham founded Stronger Beginnings after living through three years of coercive control before finally escaping in 2006. Rather than let that experience stay in the past, she turned it into purpose, becoming a survivor, advocate and campaigner focused on coercive control and institutional accountability. Today she trains HR teams, people managers, senior leaders and safeguarding officers right across the UK, using her own ABC Framework to help organisations spot the early warning signs of domestic abuse before they escalate. She is also an Ambassador for the Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse, campaigning for mandatory coercive control awareness training across every sector.

When Sam came to us, she needed a website that could do something quite unusual: hold a genuinely difficult subject with care, while still reading as credible and professional to the corporate audiences commissioning her training. It had to introduce her story without overwhelming visitors, explain the ABC Framework clearly enough for busy HR professionals to grasp in minutes, and make booking a conversation feel like the natural next step rather than a big ask. It’s the kind of brief that could easily go wrong in the wrong hands, so getting the tone right mattered as much as getting the design right.

That was clear from our very first meeting. Sam sat down with our founder Dan, who spent the first part of the conversation simply explaining who Eighty3 are, how the team works, and what we could offer, before asking a single question about what she wanted. As Sam put it herself:

“I had an initial meeting with Dan, who took the time to tell me about the business, his team, and what services they provide before finding out what I wanted as a customer. The conversation was down to earth and fun, not salesy, and there was absolutely no pressure at all to buy and pay now. Dan really took the time to listen to what I wanted, and boy did he and his team deliver. Highly recommend.”

That approach shaped the whole web design collaboration that followed. We started by listening properly, letting Sam’s story lead rather than treating it as background colour. The homepage opens with a direct, human question, “What if your workplace was the thing that made the difference?”, before introducing the ABC Framework as a practical tool rather than an abstract concept. Appearance, Behaviour and Conversation each get their own space, broken down in plain language that a manager with no specialist training could act on straight away.

Structure mattered just as much as tone. We built dedicated pages for the ABC Framework, Sam’s personal story, and a blog to support ongoing content, all sitting underneath a consistent “Book a Conversation” call to action that follows visitors through the site without feeling pushy. For a subject this sensitive, the design itself had to earn trust quietly, through clean layout, calm colour choices and copy that never sensationalises what Sam and her clients are dealing with. Every decision, from the testimonials we chose to feature to the way the sector list is presented, came out of ongoing conversations with Sam rather than assumptions on our end. That kind of back and forth is what makes a web design collaboration actually work, and it’s a big part of why we’re so pleased with how this one turned out.

The result is a site that feels personal without losing professional weight, built to convert the HR professionals, senior leaders and safeguarding officers who land on it into people ready to start a conversation. Sam now has a platform that matches the seriousness and hope of the work she does, and, by her own account of working with us, we think we got the balance right.
